Computer Eyestrain Prevention with WorkPause

Prevention is the best cure. And in case of eye strain, it's really simple: taking regular breaks for your eyes.

Use a break reminder, and set it up to notify you every 20 minutes. Then, focus your eyes for at least 20 seconds at some object at least 20 feet away (or alternatively, close your eyes for 20 seconds every 20 minutes — this is also called the "20-20-20" rule).

WorkPause is a break reminder software that can be used at your office or home.

Other Prevention Methods

  • Blink often: make a point to consciously blink your eyes more frequently. This helps replenish the tear film and reduce the eye dryness. You can also use artificial eye drops for lubricating the eye.
  • Consider wearing "Computer glasses" to help focusing on near objects and reduce glares.
  • Increase the font size of your monitor.
  • If you use CRT monitor, make sure the screen refresh rate is at least 75Hz to reduce flickering. If possible, switch to LCD.
  • Sit at least 20 inches (50 cm) from the monitor, and position it so you look downwards at it.
  • Eliminate glare and screen reflections; try not to face windows or bright light sources.
  • If the symptoms persist, this can be sign of more serious problem. Do consult your doctor.
